10 Karachiites drown in Keenjhar lake as boat capsizes

Ten members of a family died in a tragic accident when a boat capsized in the Keenjhar lake, Geo News reported on Monday.

According to police, the accident happened when a boat containing close to two dozen people from Karachi’s Mehmoodabad area capsized due to the strong wind and currents.

Police said bodies of 10 people including two children were recovered from the lake while three women were pulled out from the lake alive. The women, who were shifted to a local hospital, were said to be in critical condition.

As per reports, the boat had the capacity to only seat four people but it was carrying 13 persons which led to it being overturned. Police said the sailor of the ill-fated boat has been taken into custody.

Deputy Commissioner Usman Tanveer said that 13 people were in the boat, including 11 women and two children. Tanveer said that swimmers from Pakistan Navy were called to help in the rescue operation.

Chief Secretary Sindh Mumtaz Ali Shah took notice of the incident, saying that the affectees should be facilitated in every possible way.
