Pakistan says in close contact with US over Imran Khan’s visit

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Affairs Ministry has cautioned media against speculating about Prime Minister’s foreign visits.

The warning came after Pakistan faced an embarrassing denials from Moscow and Washington about Imran Khan’s visit to Russian and the US.

“We wish to caution against speculation about PM’s visit. We are in close contact with the U.S. side. As per practice, formal announcements are made at the appropriate time,” FO spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal said.

In a day earlier, he issued a clarification regarding Imran Khan’s purported visit to Russia which was denied by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Reports appearing in media about Prime Minister’s participation in Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Russia are speculative. Pakistan and Russia remain in contact about engagement at the highest level. Any announcement in this regard would be made formally at appropriate time,” Dr Faisal tweeted.

The US State Department has also refuted media reports about Imran Khan’s meeting with Donald Trump.

When asked about Imran Khan’s visit to the US, State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said “To my knowledge, that has actually not been confirmed by the White House.”

“I know that I have read the same reports that you have, but I would reach out to the White House to confirm or not confirm that visit, but that’s – we don’t have anything to announce here from the State Department.”

According to Pakistani officials, Imran Khan is scheduled to meet Donald Trump during his visit to the US this month.
