Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of human rights activists Amira Elghawaby as the first ever adviser to fight Islamophobia and discrimination against the Muslim community.
In an official statement, Trudeau who feels ‘diversity’ is Canada’s biggest strength said, “No one in our country should experience hatred because of their faith.” He further added, “I look forward to working with her as we continue building a country where everyone feels safe and respected.”
The announcement had come in June last year that we are wanting hire its first representative against Islamophobia. The position has been created in the light of recent attacks on the Muslims in Canada.
Amira Elghawaby who feels this role is a “deep honour” for her talked to the press and said, “Muslims are sometimes caught between being perceived as a threat or as representing a problem to solve.” “It’s our hope that we can use this moment to spur a national conversation about the value of Canadian diversity, including the richness of Canada’s Muslim communities.”
Amira is the communication lead at the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and has a journalism degree from Carleton University. She has previously worked with the Canadian labour movement on human rights issues and spent five years at the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) where she promoted civil liberties.
