ISLAMABAD: The Muharram moon was sighted on Saturday and September 10 will be the day of the Ashura.
This was determined by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which held a session to sight the moon at Karachi’s Meteorological Complex.
The meeting was presided by chief of the committee, Mufti Munibur Rehman. Different zonal committees were also held in other cities to gather evidence of the moon sighting.
The first of Muharrram will fall on Sunday. This will be the Muharram of the 441st year of the Islamic calendar.
Muharram is marked as the month in which the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was martyred along with his followers by the forces of Yazid.
In Pakistan as well as other parts of the world, mourning processions take place. Stringent security measures are taken to ensure protection of the participants of the rally.
