KARACHI: At least two people have survived the crash of a Pakistan International Airlines plane that had 107 people and crew members on board, officials said.
Sindh government spokesman Murtaz Wahab confirmed that two people – Zafar Masood and Mohammad Zubair – were in stable condition.
“So far i can confirm that 2 passengers on board the PIA plane have miraculously survived the crash. Their names are Zafar Masood & Mohd Zubair. Both are in stable condition. Keep praying for others,” he tweeted.
Saeed Ghani, a provincial minister, also shared the picture of one of the two survivors who were hospitalized for burn injuries.
Some unconfirmed reports also claim that Ansar Naqvi, a broadcast journalist, and model Zahra Abid was among the passengers who were miraculously pulled alive from the rubble.
The Karachi-bound flight which flew from Karachi with 98 people on board crashed in a crowded neighborhood on the edge of the international airport near Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Friday after what appeared to be an engine failure during landing.
Mayor Wasim Akhtar said at least five or six houses were destroyed in the crash of the domestic flight operated by Pakistan International Airlines.
He said all those on board died, but two civil aviation officials later said that at least two people survived the crash. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.
Aviation officials said the passenger plane had 91 passengers and seven crew members on board, revising earlier statements from airport officials who had said the aircraft was carrying 107 people.
