A lady in Bahrain seen smashing statues of the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha in a video revealed on-line has been charged with intentional injury and publically insulting a spiritual image.
The police stated on Sunday that the 54-year-old lady was summoned after the video on social media confirmed her “deliberately damaging a store… and breaking non secular idols” within the Juffair space within the capital Manama, in accordance with the inside ministry.
Shortly after, the general public prosecution issued a press release saying the girl had admitted to breaking the statues and was charged with a number of counts of legal injury and of insulting a spiritual image.
She might be tried in courtroom, it added.
The video reveals two ladies in a store, standing close to a show of the statues. One among them is seen grabbing statues and smashing them on the bottom.
“It is a Muslim nation, right?” one lady is heard saying to a person within the store.
“Allow us to see who will worship these statues. Name the cops,” the opposite says.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation on social media.
Khalid al-Khalifa, advisor to the king of Bahrain and former international minister, stated the girl’s actions had been unacceptable.
“Breaking of spiritual symbols is just not the character of the folks of Bahrain. It’s a crime… of hatred and is rejected,” he tweeted.
“Right here, all religions, sects and other people coexist.”
