Federal govt drafting ‘comprehensive package’ for Karachi: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Monday that the federal government was working on a comprehensive package for Karachi so that the years of neglect the city had endured could be rectified.

This was announced by the prime minister via a tweet in which he also urged PTI MNAs and MPAs to remain active in their constituencies throughout the Eid and Independence Day holidays to help Karachiites in times of distress.

“I have directed all MNAs/MPAs of Karachi to be in their constituencies throughout Eid & Independence Day holidays & provide all assistance to the ppl. The Federal Govt is drafting a comprehensive package to end the decades of neglect & suffering of the ppl of this gt metropolis,” he tweeted.

At least 11 people were killed and as per reports, more than 80 sacrificial animals were electrocuted to death when rain lashed the city on the weekend.

According to the Met department, Karachi received 200mm of rainfall over the weekend. The city’s major areas which include Korangi, Orangi Town, DHA, Clifton and many others were inundated.

Visuals of floodwater entering people’s homes inside DHA and Clifton were a common sight on Twitter and Facebook.

Rescue services were active in the city, providing help to stranded citizens in flooded areas. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and other leaders of the PPP pointed fingers at the PTI for not doing enough for the city while the PTI’s Sindh leadership lashed out at the PPP for its alleged ineptness despite being in government for more than 10 years.
