KARACHI: Former Jamaat I Islami chief Syed Munawwar Hasan passed away on Friday after a protracted illness. He was 78.
According to the party, Syed Munawwar Hasan was under treatment in a Karachi hospital, where he breathed his last.
The deceased had headed the Jamaat-e-Islami from 2009 to 2014.

Born in Delhi, India, Syed Munawar Hasan migrated to Karachi after the creation of Pakistan.
He obtained a Master’s degree in sociology in 1963, and in Islamic Studies in 1966 from the University of Karachi. He joined the National Students Federation, a student group, and was elected its president in 1959.
He joined Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba in 1960 and was elected president of its University of Karachi unit, Karachi City Unit, and a member of its Central Executive Council.
He became its national president in 1964 and served in that capacity for three consecutive terms. During his tenure the Jamiat organised several campaigns mobilising public opinion regarding education issues.
