KARACHI: Leaders and workers of the PTI on Tuesday demanded the removal of Sindh IG Mushtaq Mahar as they protested against the alleged victimisation of the party.
Scores of PTI workers and leaders protested outside the Karachi Press Club to demand the Sindh government remove Sindh IG Mushtaq Mahar. Tensions between Sindh police and the PTI rose after Sindh opposition leader Haleem Adil Sheikh was arrested last week.
Sheikh was accused by the Sindh government and police of terrorising votes in the recently-held PS-88 by-elections. A scuffle had broken out between workers of the PPP and the PTI shortly after Sheikh arrived in the constituency.
In a video that was shared on social media, Sheikh’s guards can be seen firing shots into the air. The PTI leader had claimed that they had done so to protect his life and alleged that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had tried to have him killed on the orders of PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
The protesters expressed the hope that Prime Minister Imran Khan will take “strict notice” of what had happened to Sheikh.
They condemned Sheikh’s arrest and harassment which, they said, he continues to face during detention. They said fake terrorism cases registered against the PTI leader were proof the Sindh government feared him.
