Jawad Ahmed, Rohail Hyatt in Twitter feud over Imran Khan’s rape stance

LAHORE: Singer-turned-politician Jawad Ahmad got into a lengthy Twitter exchange with Rohail Hyatt, the music producer best known for his work on Coke Studio, over comments attributed to Prime Minister Imran Khan.

It started on April 10 when Ahmed called out Hyatt for defending PM Imran Khan’s remarks linking rape with modesty and western movies, and Bollywood culture.

In a series of tweets, Mr Hyatt suggested that Imran Khan’s comments, making international news headlines, were taken out of context by media.

“I believe @ImranKhanPTI words have been taken out of context and a big ruckus created by the so-called champions of Freedom and Liberty. He’s clearly condemning rape and giving a message that going out of the boundaries of modesty invites trouble and who can deny this fact?”

“He’s not saying it’s justified! As a leader he’s simply speaking to us about the ground realities of what is around us. Yes indeed there is a sickness out there and one can contest if the better solution is to target the oppressor as opposed to the oppressed,” he added.

“But that’s not what was being addressed by him. As a father, I’d give the same advice to my child to be mindful of how you dress in our society. Not because I want to give into the sickness, but because I care for the person I’m giving the advice to.”

Hyatt’s tweets were met with an angry response from Jawad Ahmed who asked the music producer to define moral dress.
“Why are you talking stupid? Will you tell us which dresses are modest & which are not? Will you get into your child’s wardrobe & point out which dress once worn would keep her safe in the society? What if a dress you choose is still disapproved by majority?” Ahmed pointed out. igniting a war of words between the two well-known artists.
