Journalist Ali Salman Alvi arrested for allegedly murdering wife Sadaf Zahra

Alvi used to blackmail women on Twitter for money, used to cheat on wife, alleges sister-in-law

A journalist, who worked as the producer for anchor Asma Shirazi, was arrested late last month on charges of murdering his wife and covering it up as suicide.

Ali Salman Alvi was arrested by police on June 29 on charges that he killed his wife, Sadaf Zahra, and then made her death out to be a suicide. An official First Information Report (FIR) was filed by his sister on the same day, accusing Alvi of beating up his wife, torturing her, cheating on her and blackmailing several women for money on Twitter with various accounts.

The entire incident came to light as a result of a thread posted on Twitter by a woman who said she was a friend of Sadar’s sister, Mahwish. In it, she accused Alvi of cheating on her and beating her several times and proceeded to share screenshots of alleged conversations between Alvi and Sadaf as well as Alvi and several women.

Alvi used to torture, beat up wife: FIR

An FIR was registered under Section 302 (punishment for murder) on June 29 on behalf of the victim’s sister, Mahwish.

Mahwish said in the complaint that she had rushed to her sister’s place in Yousuf Colony, along with her mother and husband, after she received a call from Alvi telling her that “Sadaf has done something to herself”.

When she arrived at her sister’s house, Alvi opened the front door and all other doors in the house were closed. She opened a room in the house to find her sister hanging from the ceiling fan.

Mahwish stated in the FIR that she pulled her sister down from the fan and untied her, only to find that she had already died.

Mahwish subsequently accused Alvi of murdering his wife, alleging that he had beaten up Sadaf multiple times over the years and had tortured her as well.

She claimed that he had been warned against the abuse several times but he did not desist.
