NEW DELHI: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
“Congratulations to (Shehbaz Sharif) on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan,” Modi wrote on his X timeline.
Prime Minister Shehbaz took the oath of office on Monday after winning the prime ministerial election a day earlier. This is the second time that he has been elected to the country’s top office as earlier he was voted in as the prime minister in April 2022.
On his first day in office, PM Shehbaz Sharif received congratulatory messages from leaders of a number of important countries.
The prime minister received telephone calls from Dr. Ebrahim Raisi, President of Iran and Dr. Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The two leaders congratulated him on assuming office and expressed their desire to work closely with him to expand bilateral relations and regional cooperation. The prime minister thanked both leaders for their felicitations and invited them to visit Pakistan.
Earlier, he also received a telephone call from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkiye in which the two leaders had reaffirmed their desire to work together to strengthen ties.
The prime minister was also congratulated by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia who posted a message on X.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wrote a letter to congratulate the Prime Minister whereas President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan and Prime Minister Pushpa Kumar Dahal of Nepal also sent letters of felicitations.
It may be recalled that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang wrote letters of congratulations to the prime minister immediately after his election.
Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani also felicitated Shehbaz Sharif on his election.
The Emir, who sent a cable of congratulations to the prime minister, wished him success and for further development and growth of bilateral relations.
The Qatari Prime Minister, also the foreign minister, and Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Thani also sent cables to extend their felicitations to the newly-elected prime minister.
