New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern resigns

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces that she is stepping down from her role as the country’s leader saying she has “no more in the tank for another four years”.

Jacinda Arden said that it has been a tough journey of five and a half years and now “its time” she steps down from her position.

In a press conference she said, “I know there will be much discussion in the aftermath of this decision as to what the so called ‘real’ reason was… The only interesting angle you will find is that after going on six years of some big challenges, that I am human.”

Jacinda Arden made waves in the media since her initial election in 2017 as the youngest elected Prime Minister at 37 and was appreciated globally for her leadership.

She was particularly appreciated for stood in solidarity with the Muslims of the country after Christchurch Mosque shootings and how the COVID situation was handled in NZ where the least number of deaths were recorded.

She also clarified that the challenges and risks pertaining for her job is not the reason behing her decision of resigning, “I don’t want to leave the impression that the adversity you face in politics is the reason that people exit. Yes, it does have an impact. We are humans after all, but that was not the basis of my decision.”

Before signing off, the New Zealand Prime Minister thanked her family including her partner Clarke Gayford, and daughter Neve. She said, “To Neve: Mum is looking forward to being there when you start school this year. And to Clarke – let’s finally get married.”

The elections in New Zealand are slated to happen in early February.
