ISLAMABAD: Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has been granted a three-year service extension.
A press release from the Prime Minister Office announced that the army chief had been given a three-year extension keeping in mind the regional security situation.
“General Bajwa is appointed Chief of Army Staff for another term of three years from the date of completion of current tenure. The decision has been taken in view of the regional security development,” read the press release.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s tenure was to end in November 2019. Now, after the extension, his tenure will end in November 2022.
The announcement comes as a time when Pakistan is embroiled in a diplomatic standoff with India over the Kashmir issue.
Pakistan is also actively brokering a peace between the Afghan Taliban and the USA. The United States has asked for Pakistan’s help in evacuating its troops from Afghanistan via a smooth transition which oversees transfer of power to the locals in the war-torn country.
