Pakistan to decide on school closure amid second Coronavirus wave

The Pakistan government is set to take a decision today on whether schools should be closed in the wake of the second wave of the Coronavirus gripping the country.

Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood is scheduled to hold a meeting with Education officials and provincial education ministers.

The outcome of the meeting will be announced at 12:20, according to the minister.

“To all those eagerly awaiting the outcome of tomorrow’s inter provincial education ministers meeting. I will be holding a press conference at 12.30 after the conclusion of the meeting in which all decisions would be announced,” Mahmood tweeted.

The officials seem to be divided on whether or not schools should be shut down.

Murad Raas, the education minister of Punjab, has publicly expressed his opposition to the closure of schools on Twitter.

“If I close the Schools people are not happy. If I keep the schools open people are not happy. Let me just inform everyone that decision will be made on DATA that is being given to me. Lives matter the most. Zero pressure on me from either side. Sensible decisions have to be made,” Raas tweeted on Nov 21.

The Sindh Education and Literacy Department also decided to keep the schools open in a meeting chaired by Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani on Saturday.
