WASHINGTON: US President Donald J. Trump said on Monday that he trusted Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan.
In response to a question, President Trump said that he trusted Pakistan and its new government.
“I trust this gentleman. I trust Pakistan and I trust its new leader,” he said.
Trump said that people in his position in the past had not treated Pakistan very well. He, however, said that he had positive thoughts for Pakistan.
In response to a question, President Trump said that two parties must agree on the issue of Kashmir. He said that for mediation to take place, both countries should sit together to solve their problems.
“I have a good relationship with Prime Minister Modi and I have a good relationship with Prime Minister Imran Khan,” he said. “For mediation to take place, the assent of the other party is also needed. If they want me to mediate, I will. I’m an excellent mediator. I’ve been asked to mediate on big issues in the past, by friends,” he added.
He said that people who occupied his seat before him did not trust Pakistan.
“I trust Pakistan. People who sat in my seat before me didn’t and that was because they didn’t know what they were doing. I’m not saying Pakistan has treated us well but maybe they had a reason. In fact, they had a reason,” he added.
Trump said that Pakistan had made great progress when it came to terrorism. He said that Prime Minister Khan was a ‘great leader’ and that he understood there was no other option but to let go of militancy and tension.
