ISLAMABAD: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the use of excessive force by police across India against protestors and called for restraint in dealing with peaceful assembly.
The UN chief’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric said this while talking to reporters at the regular briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. Large scale protests are taking place across India against the controversial citizenship amendment act.
The United Nations has called India’s new citizenship law fundamentally discriminatory in nature that does not offer Muslims the same protection as other minorities.
The UN Spokesman called for restraint and urged full respect for the rights of freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly.
