US embassy apologizes for retweeting Ahsan Iqbal’s post
ISLAMABAD: The US embassy in Pakistan tendered an apology on Wednesday for tweeting a political message posted by opposition leader Ahsan Iqbal targeting Prime Minister Imran Khan.
In a message on Wednesday, the US embassy said that its Twitter account was accessed last night without authorization.
“The U.S. Embassy Islamabad Twitter account was accessed last night without authorization. The U.S. Embassy does not endorse the posting or retweeting of political messages. We apologize for any confusion that may have resulted from the unauthorized post,” the embassy said in a clarification message on Twitter.
The message came after Shireen Mazari, the federal minister for human rights, called for an apology from the US mission in Islamabad for tweeting Ahsan Iqbal’s message.
“US Embassy still working in Trumpian mode in support of convicted absconder & intervening brazenly in our internal politics! Monroe Doctrine also died centuries ago! US Embassy must observe norms of diplomacy – so if fake then clarify thru tweet; if not then apology tweet needed,” Mazari said.
In addition, pro-government netizens took to the micro-blogging website to criticize the American embassy by posting “ApologizeUSEmbassy”, which became a top trend.
Last night, US embassy retweeted Ahsan Iqbal’s shot at Imran Khan in response to an article which was critical of the outgoing US President Donald Trump.
