Pele, the Brazilian football legend, passed away at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo after a prolonged fight of cancer. He passed away on Thursday due to multiple organ failure. The news was shared by his daughter, Kely Nascimento, on her Instagram.
Pele, born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was the only footballer ever to have won three world cup titles 1958, 1962 and 1970. He was given the nickname ‘Pele” for his wrong pronunciation of ‘Bile’ the name of the goalkeeper at Vasco de Sao Lourenco. In the career span of 21 years, Pele had a record of scoring 1,281 goals. He had millions of fans all over the globe who worshipped the footballer. He was loved by his fans for stamina and to score goals from both his feet.
Pele started playing football at the age of 15 and had learned the sport from his father whose football career came to end due to a knee injury.
Since the news of his death broke, many famous personalities such Brazilian President elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, former U.S leader Barack Obama, footballer such as, Argentinean Skipper Lionel Messi, Brazillan player Neymar Jr, France’s Kylian MBappe and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and ex English player David Beckhan started pouring in their condolences.
Messi shared a post on Instagram saying, “Rest in Peace”. While Cristiano Ronaldo called him an “inspiration to millions.”
In order to honour the memory of the football legend, three mourning has been announced by the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Fans have started to gather at the stadium to leave flowers in the memory of their hero.
His former club informed that, a wake will take place on Monday, followed by a funeral on Tuesday in Santos, the southeastern city where Pele played most of his career.
