Karachi incident proves our stance on “a state above the state”: Nawaz Sharif

LONDON: Former three-time prime minister and PML-N quaid Nawaz Sharif weighed in on the controversy surrounding the detention of Sindh IGP and arrest of Captain Safdar in Karachi following the PDM’s jalsa.

“What happened in Karachi is a clear proof of our narrative that there was a state above a state,” Sharif said in a tweet referring to the application of an additional IG of Karachi.

“You ridiculed the powers of an elected provincial government and violated the sanctity of chaddar aur char diwari. You kidnapped the most senior police officers and coerced them into issuing orders. You defamed the Pakistan Army. This letter from the Additional IG Police is a proof of your rebellion against the Constitution,” Sharif tweeted.

His reaction came shortly after IGP and other top police officials of the Sindh police went on leave following the manner in which an FIR was registered against Capt (r) Safdar and the way in which he was (briefly) detained.

In his letter of leave, Sindh Additional IG Special Branch said that the “recent episode of registration of FIR against Capt Safdar the police high command was ridiculed and mishandled and all Sindh police ranks are demoralised and shocked.”
