President Arif Alvi has made the official date announcement of the upcoming Punjab elections. The elections will be held on 30th April 2023. The announcement has come a few hours after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sent a letter to the president, suggesting dates to hold the provincial elections.

The President’s secretariat has released an official statement which states that the ECP had suggested an election date between ‘April 30 and May 7’.

The Punjab and KP assemblies had been dissolved earlier this year on January 14 and January 18 respectively and as per the law, the new elections are to be held within 90 days of their dissolution.

On Wednesday, 1st March, the Supreme Court had ordered that the president and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should announce polls in Punjab after consultation.

Regarding the KP election date, the court ruled that, if the governor dissolved the assembly, then the governor will announce the election date. The ECP is now waiting for Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ghulam Ali decision regarding the matter.

After the Apex court had made the decision, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf leader Fawad Chaudhry called this verdict “a victory for the Constitution.”

While Awami Muslim League (AML) chairman Sheikh Rashid called this a ‘big victory’ and said, “Inshallah, PTI is going to form governments in KP and Punjab”.

PTI Chairman Imran also called this verdict a ‘valiant’ judgement and hence called off the Jail Bharo Tehreek.
