Karachi kings? Or Kings of the losers?

The Karachi kings have had their worst performance in PSL history immortalized this year with a devastating 7 losses in a single edition.

The Karachi kings have had their worst performance in PSL history immortalized this year with a devastating 7 losses in a single edition.

This breaks the previous record of the Lahore Qalanders, 6 lost matches in a single season of 2018 edition of PSL.

It’s safe to say this season has been brutal for the Karachi kings.

Babar Azam having such high hopes in the beginning of the season, many were hopeful the talented player could lead the team to victory this tournament. However, he is now under intense scrutiny for their poor stats and overall performance during the tournament.

All this only a week after the owner of the team and CEO of ARY digital himself Salman Iqbal issued an apology to fans for the Kings poor performance this season. In his tweet iqbal cites the issues this season of being out casted by other teams, receiving injuries and covid being their reason for losing those pervious 5 matches.  He vowed to make a comeback saying “we will try and fix it!”.  Unfortunately bob the builder seemed unavailable as the kings continued to lose two more matches.

In the last match the Kings won the toss and decided to ball, this time showcasing their best performance of the season. While chasing a target of 192, with only 80 runs on the board they lost five wickets in the eleventh over. However things took a wild turn as Pakistan U19 captain Qasim Akram and former captain of Karachi Kings Imad Wasim added 108 runs in 52 balls. Both of them scoring half-centuries and almost getting the Kings through.  They only needed 8 runs, but in the last over, Imad Wasim got a boundary on the second ball of the over. Waqas Maqsood held it together, took Imad Wasim off the field and managed three runs of last three balls but unfortunately still lost by one run.

To top it all off the Karachi Kings all round player Imad Wasim was given a fine of 5% of his match fee for a level 1 breach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Code of Conduct after the Kings match against Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Imad had violated Article 2.5 of the PSL Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The incident occurred in the first over after Imad had Rahmanullah Gurbaz caught by Babar Azam at mid-off after the opener had hit the left-arm spinner for two sixes in three balls.

Imad admitted to his offence and graciously accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle, citing there was no need for a formal hearing. The charges were upheld by umpire on-field Asif Yaqoob and Richard Illingworth, and the third and fourth umpires Rashid Riaz and Nasir Hussain. Ironically Jason Roy of the Quetta Gladiators also received a fine for 5% his match earnings for a level 1 violation after their match on Sunday in Lahore against the Qalanders.

This turbulent season for the kings has been disappointing to fans everywhere and hilarious to haters on twitter as memes and jokes run rapidly to rub salt on the wounds.

The Kings are out of the tournament with no chance to qualify for the playoffs but they still have three more matches against Multan Sultans, Lahore Qalanders and Quetta Gladiators. If they’re lucky they might knock out the Quetta gladiators from the field. The kings will be up against Multan and seem eager to end their losing streak.  Despite the great devastating losses the Kings were all still cheerful trying to end their tournament on a high note.
