SMOG continues in Lahore
The smog condition in Lahore this year has been reported to be worse than ever before. It has hugely impacted the lives of the locals of Lahore and now it is affecting those living out of Lahore as well. Earlier it was reported that the Lahore government has announced closing of schools for additional two days (Friday and Saturday) and offices to follow work from home until further notice. Now as per the latest update, the Lahore High Court has ordered to extend the ongoing winter vacations for seven more days owing the smog in the city. The government had announced the winter vacations from December 24th to December 31st.
Every year during the winters, we see increased smog in Lahore and with year every year, it is getting worse and worse. There are a number of factors that contribute to the amount of smog we see in Lahore, vehicles, agriculture and brick kilns being the three biggest contributors.
This year due to the increased smog, there has been an increased diversion in flights to Lahore and a lot of them have been cancelled, motorways had to be closed and trains got delayed. People have been advised to avoid travelling due to smog as the biggest disadvantage of it is reduced visibility which results in major accidents.
The government is trying to take measures to control the situation including awareness campaigns on TV channels and installing air quality monitoring stations in the city but it was a slow process and will take time to get a hold on the situation.
