Social Media giant Meta has given the green signal to the former US president Donald Trump. Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg stated that, “We will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks.” He however also added that in case of violation of platform policies, Trump could be suspended for up to two years.
The former US president was banned from social networking portals in January 2021 after he was held accountable for inciting violence after he spent weeks claiming that the presidential elections were stolen from him after he lost to the current US president Joe Biden. His lamenting had resulted in a mob storming inside the US capital.
The 76-year-old mogul who had 34 million followers on Facebook and 88 million followers on Twitter commented upon his return and said that Facebook had lost “billions of dollars in value” in his absence.
The news of Trump’s return to social media networks have met with a mixed response. American Civil Liberties Union executive director Anthony Romero said “Like it or not, President Trump is one of the country’s leading political figures and the public has a strong interest in hearing his speech.”
However, Angelo Carusone, the president of the advocacy group Media Matters has strong feelings against this decision. He said, “Make no mistake – by allowing Donald Trump back on its platforms, Meta is refueling Trump’s misinformation and extremism engine.”
He called this decision an “existential threat to United States democracy as a whole.”
Even though Meta has made this announcement, the date or time of Trump’s return has been left in the wraps and the company representatives chose not to comment on the same.
